SPRING LAKE — Just over a dozen youngsters at Thunder Road Books on Tuesday were reminded of an important lesson when Eileen Culley of the CulleyStrong Foundation read them her and her daughter’s children’s book: “Do You Know How Important You Are?”
“Do You Know How Important You Are?” is a storybook written last year by Eileen and her daughter Colleen that focuses on how everyone is important to someone, and how expressing kindness has a ripple effect on others. The book is dedicated to Sean Culley, their 19-year-old son/brother who took his own life in 2019.
The story follows a young boy going throughout his childhood, while his loved ones are constantly asking him; “Do you know how important you are? Do you know I need you and the world needs you?”
The boy keeps asking why he’s so important, and learns that his kindness will encourage others to be kind, “like a ripple in the ocean.”
Before she began reading her book, Ms. Culley asked the group who they believe is important. After agreeing with answers like “my family,” “my friends,” and “the President,” Ms. Culley was sure to remind them that they themselves were just as important.
On the last page of the book, readers will find an empty list, numbered one through five, titled: “Let’s see if you can name five reasons you are important and the world needs you.”
After the reading, Ms. Culley signed listener’s copies of the books. A number of books were purchased at the event, and all proceeds are set to be given to the CulleyStrong Foundation.
“My intention is to get the message out to as many people as I possibly can,” Ms. Culley told The Coast Star. “That every person is important, special and this world needs everyone.”
“Do You Know How Important You Are?” can be purchased at Thunder Road Books, Amazon and at theculleystrongfoundation.com.
