AVON-BY-THE-SEA — The borough held its 26th annual 5K run/ walk on Saturday, June 4, an annual fundraiser for the Avon First Aid Squad.
John Kennedy, race director, explained that the weather was beautiful and perfect for the annual event, aiding in the great turn out.
Mr. Kennedy said that there were 1,129 participants in the run/ walk event.
The first place male winner was 22 year-old Carrington Retzios, who finished in 16 minutes and 18 seconds, with an average pace of five minutes and 14 seconds per mile.
The first place female winner was 27-year-old Nicolette Mateescu, who finished in 17 minutes and 55 seconds, with an average pace of five minutes and 46 seconds per mile.
The race started on Ocean Avenue and Sylvania Avenue, looped around Avon and ended at Ocean and Woodland Avenue.
John Kennedy explained how this is the largest fundraiser for the First Aid Squad of the year, with the squad being completely volunteer, they rely on the annual 5k event and donations.
