BRIELLE — Brielle Elementary School first through fourth graders meet every Tuesday after school to participate in the Eco Club — a new group aimed at helping students reconnect with nature, understand biodiversity and prepare to become environmental leaders.
The group is led by Ken Yee, a Brielle Elementary School science teacher, along with parents, Maren Clayton, Suzanne Donlan and Lori Garrabrant, and Will Heyniger, Professor of Environmental Science at Kean University.
“We started working with the students this year on a few initiatives,” said Mr. Yee. “We seeded a pollinator garden on the school grounds and are participating in “No Mow May,” which will give us insight into what’s growing out there already.”
Professor Heyniger volunteered his time and tiller on April 23 to help Mr. Yee and the parent participants stake out a 12 foot by 20 foot garden on the school grounds. They prepped the garden beds with compost to ensure a rich growing environment. Mr. Yee’s science class then seeded the space that week with wildflowers that are known to attract local pollinators.
