BRIELLE — Members of the Brielle Boy Scouts Troop 63 will be participating in a 50-mile bike ride this weekend to complete their cycling badge. The ride will end at Brielle Park on Saturday, timed to coincide with the fire truck wetdown happening on the same day. The scouts, Will Valentine, Finn Callahan, Charlie Kauffman, Cole Kauffman, William van Der Net and Connor Feeney, have been working on this badge as part of their journey towards obtaining the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout.
Throughout the process of working on the badge, the boys have raised $12,000 for the MS Society and will be riding in honor of Carol DeVito, a family friend of two of the boys, who has been battling multiple sclerosis for 36 years. They are honored to be riding on her behalf.
The ride is the final step in a long process that involved training for the big ride by completing two 10 mile rides, two 15 mile rides, two 25 mile rides as well as learning about bike safety and learning about bike maintenance.
The community has pitched in to help the Boy Scouts get to this point. Over the winter, the owner of the Brielle Sports Club, Bill Skala, offered to let the five boys train at the club until the weather warmed up. In April, Cycle 54 in Belmar hosted a lesson on bike maintenance and safety to help the boys prepare for any issues they might encounter on the road during their longer solo rides. The shop also lent the boys trainer bikes to ride indoors during bad weather. Additionally, members of the community have donated to help the boys reach their fundraising goal.
