LAKE COMO — Mayor Kevin Higgins and the borough council approved a resolution supporting Lake Comos national police week and the police department unity tour to Washington D.C. at the mayor council meeting on Tuesday May 3.
In 1962 President Kennedy established May 15 as national police officer’s memorial day, making the week of the 15 national police week.
All government buildings will display the flag at half staff on May 15 of each year explained Mayor Higgins.
To bring awareness to this week, the Belmar police department will be doing their annual bike tour, from New Jersey to Washington D.C.
“Whereas the police unity tour established in May of 1997, consists of high school riders and support staff traveling from New Jersey to Washington D.C. to bring public awareness to police officers that have been killed in the line of duty and to raise funds for the national law enforcement memorial in Washington D.C.,” said Mayor Higgins.
