POINT PLEASANT — Parents brought their children to Point Pleasant High School football field, dressed as their favorite superheroes to take part in the Super Hero Family Fun Run, organized by Greg Akins, a teacher at Nellie F. Bennett Elementary school on Sunday, April 24.
“I’m just trying to do something new for the community to get kids and families to come together to get some exercise in a positive environment,” he told The Ocean Star.
Mr. Akins, whose G-Funk Entertainment has previously run similar events for children in the borough, said the Super Hero theme was a new one.
Boys and girls dressed as superheroes – including Superman, Iron Man, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man and Batman – took part in a one-mile walk, run and “fly” obstacle course. All participants were given an award upon completion and afterward enjoyed light refreshments.
The motivation, Mr. Akins said, is to “keep kids smiling, active and healthy in fun and different ways.”
Tara Cooper, another organizer of the event said, “I hope this is the first of many.”
She said this summer the company will kick off gladiator season, which is a weekly exercise program for kids.
During the pandemic, Mr. Akins explained that his company adapted to bring the fun to families by organizing front yard fitness parties for birthdays and other celebrations.
Ms. Cooper’s husband, Dan, who brought their kids Shaun, 3 and Molly, 5, said, “We’ve come to some of these events before and so we are here to support. A lot of our neighbors and members of the community showed up so it’s been great.”
Tim Brennan, a Point Pleasant Borough resident, brought his daughter, Emma, 5, dressed as Wonder Woman.
“We always hear good things about G-Funk Entertainment and we live in town so we strolled down. It’s a good idea and a nice thing to do on a Sunday,” he said.
