BRIELLE — The Brielle borough council adopted the $10.5 million 2022 Municipal Budget during its meeting on April 25.
The budget represents an increase of $605,445 over last year’s municipal budget. Tax proceeds will fund $8.1 million of borough spending. The budget calls for a borough tax rate of 1.299 percent, which will translate into an annual municipal tax bill of $3,706.03 for homes assessed at the borough average, a $55.36 increase over 2021.
The average assessment in town rose significantly, coming in at $911,690, versus last year’s number of $769,162, reflecting a general increase in home and property values.
The Borough, by ordinance, increased the budget by 3.5 percent or one percent above the permitted amount within the CAP. They resolved to ask the State to place any increase in insurance costs in 2023 outside of the CAP to ensure that the municipality can meet its obligations even if insurance premiums increase dramatically, as they are expected to. The council confirmed via email that this ordinance is an annual event.
Additionally, the council adopted a bond ordinance, introduced at its April 11 meeting.
The ordinance authorizes the issuance of $608,000 in bonds to finance the costs of improvements to roads and local infrastructure including: the acquisition of various equipment for the Department of Public Works including a trash compactor; miscellaneous street and drainage improvements; acquisition of various police communications and computer equipment; acquisition of various first aid equipment; and the acquisition of a fire truck and fire equipment.
The bonds will supplement $349,250 in grant funds received from the state Department of Transportation.
The council also introduced two new ordinances, to be read and open to public hearing on May 9 at 6 p.m.
