ELECTION: Republicans unseat Democrats in Manasquan, Spring Lake

Republican candidates gained seats on borough councils in Manasquan and Spring Lake Tuesday, unseating Democratic incumbents in both municipalities.

In Manasquan, Republicans Lori A. Triggiano and Brian G. Holly defeated Democrats Jason A. Bryant, who was seeking reelection, and Charles Kelly, who was making his first run.

In Spring Lake, Republican challenger Kathleen McDonough outpolled incumbent Democrats Syd Whalley and Robert Drasheff, drawing 718 votes to 618 for Ms. Whalley and 617 for Mr. Drasheff in a race for two seats on the borough council, making it certain that one of the two Democrats will be unseated.

In Belmar, Republican Jodi Kinney led Democrat Gerald A. Buccafusco, 1,161 to 1,134, with Mr. Buccafusco talking about recount. Both were making their first runs for the single borough council seat on the Belmar ballot.

Statewide, Gov. Phil Murphy, a Democrat, was projected the winner late Wednesday in an unexpectedly close race with Republican challenger Jack Ciattarelli.

Mr. Ciattarelli received a big lift from Monmouth County voters, who preferred him, 128,481 to 79,529 for Gov. Murphy.
