Borough employees honored for life saving actions

BELMAR — The Belmar mayor and council Tuesday honored four individuals for lifesaving actions on behalf of a Toms River man who suffered a heart attack on the borough’s boardwalk on Aug. 16.

“They were able to save a life. It was amazing work from all four of them,” Mayor Mark Walsifer said before reading a proclamation honoring George Komitas, a borough DPW worker, Special Officer Brian J. Heine Jr., and EMTs Robert DeMartin and Abigail Gaudette.

At approximately 9 a.m. on Aug. 16, Marty Novitch, a gate attendant, was stricken with a heart attack while at work on the Belmar boardwalk. Mr. Komitas came to his aid, administering CPR, and was soon joined and assisted by Special Officer Heine Jr.,  Mr. DeMartin and Ms. Gaudette.

According to Mayor Walsifer, their quick response ultimately led to Mr Novitch making a full recovery.
