POINT PLEASANT — Point Pleasant School District faculty and staff have been recognized for their dedication to and support of the students and school community.
During the board of education’s May 24 meeting district school nurses were recognized with the Exemplary Service Award in honor of their leadership throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We wanted to start by honoring four individuals who have been instrumental this year in helping us get our doors open in September and keeping them open throughout the school year,” Superintendent Vincent S. Smith said.
“As school nurses, they have been the go-to for guidance since the start of the pandemic. Without them the reopening of our schools would not have been possible. On top of providing their daily nursing services they continued to be a valuable resource for the administration, staff and parents to ensure the health and safety of our school community and … we felt it was necessary for this administration and this board of education to take a few minutes to really thank our nurses.
“You have, as you have heard me say, worked hard for us and I have learned from all of you. You helped me get through this and helped me make some tough decisions with the guidance that you provided, so my hat’s off to you guys, and thank you all.”
Being recognized for helping to keep the school community safe and healthy were Cynthia Barry, of Point Pleasant Borough High School; Deborah Ewtushek, of Memorial Middle School; Jill Lebret, of Nellie F. Bennett Elementary School; and Christine Russell, of Ocean Road Elementary School. Each received a standing ovation and long rounds of applause as they were presented with their awards.
“I am very humbled by this award. I always think of my role as the school nurse as an advocate not only for the child but for the family,” Ms. Ewtushek told The Ocean Star in an email.
“Working in Point Pleasant Borough has been an honor! Bravo to all of the families who have worked very hard to keep their children healthy.”
In addition to the Exemplary Service Awards being presented, Mr. Smith and the board of education also recognized the recipients of the 2021 Principal’s Teacher Recognition Award.
“As you know the [Point Pleasant Foundation for Excellence in Education] is wonderful in supporting the school district not only financially, but also just in support of our staff and students through various ways throughout the school year. This is an award they established a few years ago and … is another avenue where we get to recognize [our faculty’s] hard work,” Mr. Smith said.
“I want to thank the foundation for their continued support. This is another group of outstanding educators here, so thank you for all your hard work and dedication.”
Among those honored were David Drew, of Point Pleasant Borough High School; Ms. Ewtushek, of Memorial Middle School; Ms. Lebret, of Nellie F. Bennett Elementary School; and Timothy Jaworovich, of Ocean Road Elementary School.
