BRIELLE — Despite the coronavirus pandemic, members of The Church In Brielle were able receive ashes outdoors – walk-up or drive-thru style – on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17.

The Rev. Louis J. LaFazia distributed the ashes to preschoolers and their parents in a session starting at 8:30 a.m., and to other church members in sessions starting at 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Afterward, at 6:30 p.m., the church held a Zoom gathering in which church members ate soup and participated in prayer and fellowship. The Reformed church  is located at 821 Riverview Drive.

Ash Wednesday begins the Christian liturgical season of Lent, a 40-day period that culminates with Holy Week and Easter on Sunday, April 4.
