MANASQUAN — For 14 years Big Hearts to Little Hearts has held its annual Heart Walk to raise money and show support for children suffering from congenital heart disease [CHD]. This year’s event, however, was bittersweet as it also honored Kathy Schmidt, a longtime supporter and member of the organization who died in July.
More than 100 attendees walked on the boardwalk in Manasquan on Sunday, Sept. 20, raising close to $25,000 for children with CHD, according to Lynne Accisano, president of Big Hearts to Little Hearts.
“It was a much smaller group than we normally have, but nonetheless it was a beautiful day and people were really happy to see each other after all this time not seeing each other,” Ms. Accisano said.
She said many of the walkers came out to honor Ms. Schmidt, whose absence was felt by the entire Big Hearts to Little Hearts family.
“It was very bittersweet because Kathy wasn’t with us, but it was a lovely tribute to her that so many people who knew and loved her came out for her,” Ms. Accisano said.
Ms. Schmidt had served as the organization’s treasurer and on the board for nearly a decade.
