Bernard Aloysius McLaughlin, 87, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2020 at Sweetgrass Court Senior Living in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.
“Bernie” is a former resident of Manasquan, where he raised nine children, all of whom attended Manasquan schools. Bernie was a devoted grandfather who relished traveling and spending time with his nine children and 15 grandchildren on both coasts. He often enjoyed See’s candy, milkshakes and always getting in the water.
Born Sept. 30, 1932 in Jersey City, Bernie was the son of the late William V. McLaughlin and Margaret [Whelan] McLaughlin. Raised in Jersey City, he lifeguarded many years in Avon, where his parents kept a summer home. Bernie attended Fordham University, and graduated from St. Peter’s College and New Jersey Institute of Technology. He served in the U.S. Army ROTC program [1950 to 1954] during the Korean War, stationed in Anniston, Alabama. He worked as an electrical engineer for the federal government until 1988, when he retired to San Diego, California to spend time with family, enjoying the city, restaurants and beaches. He also took several trips to Europe visiting Germany, England and Ireland.
Bernard is survived by his children: Kevin, Sean, Susan, Brian, Chris, Sheila, Robert, Sarah and predeceased by daughter Ellen McLaughlin. Additionally, he is survived by 15 grandchildren: Emma, Celia, Zachary, Sean Jr., Ally, Ellise, Tavis, Sabina, Lukas, Mari, Katherine, Lily, Kahlil, Christian and Colbie, also survived by former spouse of 25 years Dorothy Kukla. Private memorial services will be held Sept. 14 at Beaufort National Cemetery, South Carolina.
