WALL TOWNSHIP – A new Target store is to open in the vacant Kmart store on Route 35 in north Wall.

The location, in the shopping plaza at the corner of Route 35 and 18th Avenue, appears on the list of  “future opening” stores on the Target corporate website.

“I can confirm Target has plans to open a store in Wall Township,” a Target spokesperson said Wednesday.

“Located at 1825 State Route 35, the store will be approximately 91,000 square feet. As we get closer to opening the store, we’ll have more specific details to share – including how the shopping experience will be tailored to serve local guests and the grand opening date,” the spokesperson said.

The Target will replace the Kmart store that closed in December 2019.

Mayor Carl Braun said he was pleased to hear the news.

It brings a nice level of shopping to town, and there will be employment opportunities,” he said.

The mayor said that with a new ShopRite supermarket being constructed across the highway and other retailers that have come to Route 35 in recent years, “It is all very positive. Wall is doing very well with retail businesses. It is pretty healthy.”
