New date, Oct. 17, announced for annual Sea Girt 5K

SEA GIRT — The 29th annual Sea Girt 5K, originally set for Aug. 1, has been rescheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The race was pushed to October “pending the climate at that time,” according to race director Mike D’Altrui. He added that the race will take place in one form or another, and he hopes it will be back to normal next year.

Although the race committee’s goal is to hold a traditional, in-person event, Mr. D’Altrui said the committee is looking at other options for the race, including a virtual race or several heats of runners starting at staggered intervals to prevent overcrowding.

“Generally speaking, outdoor activities are pretty safe, but if you get a couple thousand people that might be a little dicey,” Mr. D’Altrui said.

“We want to do it in a safe and responsible way that people are comfortable with, and obviously comfort level is different for different individuals depending on their situation,” he added.

Registration is open online at Adult entry for the 5K run/walk is $30, and $15 for the kids’ races and activities. The run/walk goes off at 8:30 a.m. with shorter kids’ races starting at 10 a.m.

T-shirt and race bib pickup will be held on Friday, Oct. 16 from 3 to 7 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 17 from 6 to 8:30 a.m. at The Plaza.

Participants who have already registered have the option to request a full refund; run in the Oct. 17 race if the event is able to be held; donate entry to be distributed to local charities; or use entry for next year’s event on Aug. 7, 2021.

Any additional changes to the run will be announced by Sept. 17.
