Memorial wins on final drive, Beach shuts out Pinelands

Brick Memorial 29, Freehold Township 22

Brick Memorial won its first game of the season, on the road, in a late thriller. With 1:20 left in the game, the Mustangs ended a 70-yard drive with a Mekhi Irving touchdown and followed with the two-point conversion for the seven-point win. Setting up the scoring play was Akhi Barksdale who had a huge 50-yard play to set up the score.

The game was tied at 14 heading into the fourth quarter until T.J. McArthur broke the plane and the draw, 21-14.

This marks the first win of the season for the Mustangs who are now 1-2.

Point Beach 10,  Pinelands 0

A touchdown pass from senior quarterback Jack Akins to senior wideout Matt VanBrunt gave the Point Beach football team what it needed in a 10-0 victory against Pinelands on the road, Friday, Sept. 20.

Senior George Kaiafas made a field goal as well. The win marked Beach’s first road-victory under head coach Joseph Zaccone.

The defense continued its dominance with its second-straight shutout. The Garnet Gulls have only allowed seven points in their first, three games. 

Raritan 35, Point Boro 14

The Point Boro Panthers dropped its second-consecutive game in a 35-14 loss to Raritan on the road tonight, Friday, Sept. 20. 

St. John Vianney 45, Brick Township 21

Brick Township hung with St. John Vianney for a majority of the first half until the Lancers took over the game, scoring right before the horn, 24-14. The Lancers then scored two straight touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters to jump ahead 45-14. 

Anthony Prato scored his second touchdown of the game with just under six minutes to play on a 55-yard sprint to the house, 45-21. Also scoring for the Dragons was Joe Armooh, recording the first touchdown of the game early in the first on a one-yard run. 

The loss moves the Dragons to 1-2 on the season.
