MANASQUAN — An active pickup and drop-off zone benefiting rideshare companies such as Uber and Lyft will be created in the borough in time for the summer season.
Taxis also will have access to the new zone, but only for pickup and drop-off.
The ordinance establishing the zone was approved by the borough council Monday night, along with an ordinance eliminating borough licensing fees for taxis. Both ordinances, 2276-19 and 2277-19, were approved unanimously.
While no public comment was offered on the issue Monday, the two ordinances had been previously criticized by owners and drivers of taxi companies.
Gregory Hall, owner of Sandy’s New Manasquan Taxi, G Hall Enterprises LLC, attended the Jan. 22 meeting when the ordinances were introduced and called the proposals “infuriating.”
“The state of the taxis in Manasquan right now are going out of business. … This move is going to hurt us. It’s going to hurt us bad,” he said.
