MANASQUAN — Charges against Spring Lake Heights councilman Robert Merriken stemming from an Aug. 8 arrest in Brielle were dismissed this week in Manasquan municipal court.

Mr. Merriken was charged with possession of a controlled deadly substance [CDS] and possession of drug paraphernalia, following an arrest by Brielle police in August.

This is the second time that Mr. Merriken has faced charges and had them dismissed this year. On Sept.20, a Neptune Township judge dismissed drug paraphernalia charges after ruling that the search of his vehicle during a traffic stop that led to his subsequent arrest on April 4 had been made without sufficient evidence.

Mr. Merriken, who did not seek reelection this year, served the last of his term at the Spring Lake Heights council meeting on Dec. 10.
