SPRING LAKE — The mood in Spring Lake’s Marucci Park was a celebratory one Saturday afternoon as the local first aid squad celebrated 90 years of volunteer service to the borough.
Aromas of food and the sound of music filled the air as community members of all ages came out to show their support and help celebrate the first responders.
“Its great to have people come out and show their support. We have a lot of other first responders like the firemen and police as well as we asked a lot of the people we’ve helped to come out and celebrate,” said Peg Ciufo, who is finishing her seventh year on the squad.
For 30 year member Ellen Gannon, Spring Lake First Aid Squad making it to 90 years as a volunteer unit is a major accomplishment.
“Now-a-days when you see so many towns are moving to paid squads, its pretty amazing that we’re still all volunteers and we’ve now been around for 90 years,” she said.
Games, food and a beer garden helped celebrate the event.
