Autumn is all about apples


    Although apple picking may be the farthest thing from your mind as you’re still daydreaming of an endless summer, Sept. 1 promptly starts the season of apple picking. Head to an orchard near you for a fun-filled day of picking your own apples, baking a homemade pie, hitching a trip on a hayride and more. Apple picking and all its delightful offshoots culminate in these upcoming apple picking outings and events.


    The month of September is all about apples at Battleview Orchards, 91 Wemrock Road, Freehold, as they offer apple picking for a multitude of apple varieties.

    The orchards grow Gala, Jonamac, MacIntosh, Cortland, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Empire, Jonagold, Macoun, Stayman Winesap, Rome Beauty, Granny Smith, Braeburn and Fuji apples. Each type of apple has its own picking dates, with some ending before October and others closing out in October.

    Starting Sept. 29 Battleview Orchards offers hayrides on the weekends. The orchards will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, visit

    Eastmont Orchards, 181 County Road 537 East, Colts Neck, wants everyone to know their apple varieties, which is why they have a “Know Your Fruit” section on the website. According to Eastmont Orchards, apples of the same variety, even on the same tree, often vary in ripeness and firmness.

    Early September is the time to pick Honeycrisp and MacIntosh apples while mid-September to mid-October is designated to Cameo, Cortland, Crispin, Empire, Golden Delicious, Ida Red, Jonathan, Macoun, Red Delicious and Spartan. Mid-October to closing is the time to pick Arkansas Black, Braeburn, Fuji, Granny Smith, Red Rome, Stayman Winesap and Yellow Newtown Pippin.

    Weather and supply permitting, Eastmont Orchards is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. For more information, visit


    Delicious Orchards, Rte. 34 South, Colts Neck, presents its annual event, Apple Fest 2018 on Saturday, Sept. 8 and Sunday, Sept. 9 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. According to the Delicious Orchards website, Apple Fest is the ultimate summer send-off and fall kick-off all in one. The biggest event of the year at the orchards, each year boasts a bigger and better fest.

    The festival will be packed with games, prizes, live music, local food vendors, an antique car show and obviously, bunches and bushels of apples.
