Mayor Wilton leaving to join Murphy administration

LAKE COMO — Mayor Brian Wilton is stepping down to accept a position as an attorney on the staff of New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy.

The resignation, announced by the mayor at Tuesday night’s borough council meeting, will be effective July 9.

“It is with excitement yet sadness that I will be stepping down as your mayor,” Mr. Wilton said at the meeting.

Mr. Wilton has served the residents of Lake Como for almost 13 years, first as a councilman, then council president and, for the past four years, as mayor. “This experience has been one of the most rewarding of my adult life,” he said.

During his term as mayor, Mr. Wilton led Lake Como through a serious budgetary crisis that forced the borough to close its police department and enter a contract for police coverage by the Belmar Police Department. Fire and emergency services were also outsourced.
