POINT BEACH — The Point Beach football team went into halftime down 14-0 to Manville in the first round of the NJSIAA Group I state tournament on Friday, Nov. 10.
Point Beach fumbled the ball three times in the opening half and did not recover any of the loose balls. The Garnet Gulls struggled to move the ball, gaining 43 yards in the first half.
“We put the ball on the ground, it wasn’t anything they did, no big hits, forget the cold weather, they were cold just like us, it was just bad exchanges,” Head coach John Wagner said. “If we had done everything we were supposed to do and won, great. If we didn’t do everything we were supposed to do, not so great. And, we would have been sick about the way we played the first half.”
The second half was a different story for Point Beach as the team gained 238 yards and scored 22 unanswered points. The Garnet Gulls defeated the Mustangs 22-14.
The comeback started when senior quarterback and linebacker Luke Frauenheim threw a 15-yard pass to senior wide receiver Josh Yates in the end zone. Freshman John Wall made the extra point, making it 14-7.
After the touchdown, Point Beach kicked off, but Manville fumbled the ball and it was junior running back Brad Parry who recovered it. The Garnet Gulls offense marched the ball down the field and senior running back Chris Webber carried the ball six yards for a touchdown.
