Fatovic leads ‘team-oriented’ Mustangs

BRICK — The Brick Memorial boys soccer team is looking for more players to move the ball this season.

The Mustangs struggled in 2016, finishing 3-17-1. In a disappointing season, Erik Fatovic rose as the team’s leading scorer with 13 of the squad’s 29 goals.

The current senior earned second team Class A South honors. Out of the 14 players named to the all-state group, Fatovic was the only player to have no teammates recognized alongside him.

“He wondered why everyone else had teammates around them,” head coach Steve Ferullo said. “The answer is winning, you get more awards when you win.”

As the Mustangs get closer to hosting their season opener against Jackson Memorial on Thursday, Sept. 7, Ferullo expects to start all six seniors and four or five of his nine juniors.

The coach is happy with what he has seen so far. At the team’s latest pre-season tournament in Shawnee, seven different players netted 11 goals.
