Man fatally shot by police following domestic dispute

BRICK TOWNSHIP — A man allegedly armed with a handgun was fatally shot Sunday morning after a domestic dispute that put two women in the hospital.

According to Al Della Fave, a spokesperson for the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, the Brick Township Police responded to a 911 call from an unidentified neighbor reporting a domestic disturbance at 141 Meridian Drive at approximately 5:30 on Sunday, Aug. 20.

“Allegedly there was a physical altercation between the deceased male and at least two adult females who suffered injuries and taken to an area hospital,” Mr. Della Fave said, declining to specify the hospital.

The officers were met by a man outside of the residence who was allegedly armed with a handgun, Mr. Della Fave said, and a “police involved shooting took place.”

Mr. Della Fave declined to identify any individuals involved nor the number of shots fired, adding that more information will be released as the investigation moves forward.

“To date, the only thing we’ve released is that the suspect is deceased with regard to a domestic disturbance,” Mr. Della Fave said, adding the identity and cause of death of the deceased must still be confirmed by the medical examiner.

“We need to … speak with the two surviving females to find out what took place with the residence to find out what would have let to him being armed and to interview the officers to find out why they would have fired their duty weapons,” he said.

Mr. Della Fave declined to confirm how many individuals were in the home, acknowledging that there were “at least two” women involved.

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit is leading the investigation, Mr. Della Fave said.

Sgt. Neal Pedersen referred all questions to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.
