Police thwart an attempted child luring at Walmart


BRICK TOWNSHIP — An attempted child abduction was thwarted Thursday at Walmart on Route 88, township police said.

A suspect described as an older white male attempted to grab the wrist of a 10-year-old boy inside the Walmart store at approximately 12:26 p.m. Thursday, according to the Brick Township Police Department. After pulling his arm free, the boy reported the incident to his mother, who was standing several feet away from him at the time of the incident.

Brick Township Police Officer Raymond LaPoint, who had been patrolling the Walmart parking lot, responded to the incident.

The suspect was described as a gray or white-haired white male, 5 feet 10 inches to six feet tall, with a medium build, wearing a dark-colored baseball cap. According to the police department press release, the suspect made no statements to the child and left the area following the incident.

A representative from the Brick Township Walmart declined to comment.
