POINT BORO — Former Point Boro Panther Kelly Hughes is officially a professional basketball player. After finishing her tour at Boston College this year, the shooting guard is now heading to Freiberg, Germany, to take the court for the USC Eisvogel Freiburg.
“Basketball has been a big part of my life since I was 5-years-old,” said Hughes.
“I didn’t want to stop playing after my last game in a Boston College uniform and figured while I’m still young I might as well keep doing what I love in a foreign country, where I’ve never been before and experience a new culture and have new teammates and learn from a new coach. It’s just an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”
Before becoming a professional athlete, Hughes graduated from Boro back in 2013 as the Shore Conference all-time leading scorer with 2,588 points, a record that untouched for almost 40 years. She also left her Boro and Shore Conference legacy with a 22.5 scoring average, 908 rebounds, 494 steals and 428 assists.
“Kelly was not only one of the best basketball players to come through Point Boro, but also one of the best players in Shore Conference history,” said Point Boro girls basketball head coach David Drew.
