Richard Hurley

West Belmar, Wall Township resident Richard D. Hurley died on Sunday, March 9, in Care One in Wall.

He was 83 years old.

Born in Wall Township, he lived in Spring Lake Heights before moving to the West Belmar section of Wall Township 53 years ago.

Mr. Hurley was a electronic engineer for Camp Evans in Wall for 25 years before retiring. He was a World War II veteran of the United States Army.

Mr. Hurley is survived by his brother, Donald, of Ocean Grove; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held today at the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South St., Manasquan, at 11 a.m.

Interment will be held in Atlantic View Cemetery, Manasquan.

Kerry F. Quigley

Livonia, Mich. resident Kerry F. Quigley, formerly of Manasquan, died on March 7 in her home.

She was 58 years old.

Born in Point Pleasant, she grew up in Manasquan. She lived in Delaware and several other states before moving to Livonia, Mich., 13 years ago.

Mrs. Quigley was a teacher for 25 years. She graduated from Manasquan High School in 1967 and was the valedictorian.

Mrs. Quigley is survived by her husband, the Rev. John Quigley; and is also survived by two sons, John and his wife, Kim, and Brendan; her daughter, Erin Ruth; two brothers, Robert Clouse Jr. and Devon Clouse; and four grandchildren, Megan, John, Patrick and Jack T.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 15 at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Manasquan.

Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Brielle.

Visitation will be held on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Samuel Martuscelli

Belmar resident Samuel “Butch” Martuscelli died on Wednesday, March 5 in Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House, Daytona Beach, Fla.

He was 61 years old.

He was born in Neptune and was a lifelong resident of the Jersey Shore. He was a graduate of Neptune High School and a U.S. Army veteran.

Mr. Martuscelli was a self-employed mason.

He was predeceased by his mother, Leah Martuscelli, in 1996.

He is survived by his two daughters and one son-in-law, Marisa and William Suozzo, Ocean, and Dawn Martuscelli, Asbury Park; his father, Samuel S. Martuscelli, Venice, Fla.; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Michael Martuscelli, Venice, Fla., and Ronnie and Sandra Martuscelli, Palm Coast, Fla.; and one sister, Joy Martuscelli, Indigo, Fla.

Interment was private.

Elma Salzer

Wall resident Elma Salzer died on Thursday, March 6, in Ocean Medical Center, Brick Township.

She was 88 years old.

Born in Passaic, she lived in Wayne before moving to Wall in 1965. She owned her own sewing business in Wall for many years. Elma met once a week at the Manasquan Lutheran Church, where she loved knitting and crafts.

She was predeceased by her husband, William J., in 1990.

She is survived by her son, William F., of Howell; one daughter, Christine Valentine, of Brick; and four grandchildren, Kathleen and Ronald Valentine and Caroline and William J. Salzer.

Interment was held at Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arneytown.

John Byrne

Brielle resident John Joseph Byrne died on Tuesday, March 11, in Ocean Medical Center, Brick.

He was 70 years old.

Born in Newark, he lived in South Orange for 38 years before coming to Brielle eight years ago. Mr. Byrne was a marketing manager with New Jersey Bell before retiring.

John was a proud graduate of St. Benedict’s Prep Class of 1956 and attended Seton Hall University. He remained active as a Pirate Blue supporter and was an ardent fan of Seton Hall Men’s Basketball.

John was a longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Sorrows Church in South Orange, where he had been a member of the Knights of Columbus, an active leader of the Right to Life Committee and a longtime volunteer at St. John’s Soup Kitchen in Newark. He also worked hard at the Musameco Yard Sale, the proceeds of which benefit women and children in El Salvador.

Mr. Byrne was a loyal and devoted husband and a proud and loving father. He was a member of the Seton Hall Prep Fathers Club and was a fan and supporter of athletics at St. Bonaventure University, where his sons attended. Active in his community he was a board member and trustee of the Barclay Woods Homeowners Association. He was well-known and loved by many for his sense of humor.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Martin and Thomas Byrne.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Adele Mary Range Byrne; his sons, John J. Byrne III, Peter M. Byrne and his wife, Maureen, Matthew W. Byrne and his wife, Kristen; his daughter, Elizabeth Anne Danish and her husband, Quintin; and his loving grandchildren, Caitlin and Chloe Byrne, Seton, Grace, Quintin John and Genevieve Danish, Peter John and Kathleen Elizabeth Byrne, Thomas Patrick, James Michael and Jackson Walter Byrne. He also leaves his sister, Helen Dunleavy and her husband, Jack; his mother-in-law, Genevieve F. Range; his sisters-in-law, Arlene McDonald and her husband, Pat, and Joan and Arlene Byrne.

Visiting will be held today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Highway 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall.

Mass will be held at St. Denis Church, Manasquan, on Friday at 9:30 a.m. followed by committal at. St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Wall.

Donald G. Hall

Wall Township resident Donald G. “Pop Pop” Hall, a longtime resident of Asbury Park, passed away Wednesday, March 5, in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was 64 years old.

As a lifelong resident of the Jersey Shore, he attended Bangs Avenue Elementary School and Asbury Park High School.

Donald was employed by Nino’s Bakery, in Long Branch, as a young man and later after his retirement from the state; Montgomery Ward Automotive, Eatontown, Asbury Park and Rahway as an inspector and supervisor. He retired from the state in 1994.

Donald was well known as the “Coupon King” in local supermarkets. He shared groceries and his homemade bread with many folks. He was always there to lend a hand to those in need. Donald valued his family and close friends deeply. He was a true fan of country music, especially Johnny Cash.

Donald was predeceased by his father, Charles Hall; two brothers, Thomas Hall and James Hall; and two sisters, Carol Hall and Rosemarie Barrett.

He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Alice A. Groner Hall; his loving daughter, Jeanne Marie Hall Dispenza and son-in-law, Gianluca Dispenza; darling granddaughters, Livia and Lily Dispenza, who were the light of his life; and his loving mother, Rose Czerwinski, all of Wall Township; a brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Marie Czerwinski, of Wanamassa; a brother and sister-in-law, Stanley and Donna Czerwinski, of Neptune City; a brother, David Czerwinski, of Neptune; a brother, Fred Czerwinski; a brother and sister-in-law, Chester and Joan Czerwinski, Manchester; a sister, Sherrie Czerwinski, of Howell, a sister and brother-in-law, Ann Marie and Terry Lameo, of Toms River; and cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are private under the direction of the Johnson McGinley Funeral Home.

Elsie MacNeal

Wall Township resident Elsie H. MacNeal, formerly of Ocean City, died peacefully on Sunday, March 9.

She was 102 years old.

Born in Camden, Elsie resided in Philadelphia and Ocean City, before moving to Sunrise Assisted Living, in Wall.

She was the senior administrator for Curtis Publishing in Philadelphia. She traveled, along with her husband, Robert H. MacNeal, president of Curtis Publishing, extensively throughout the world, and attended many dinners and functions. She enjoyed reading.

She was the beloved wife of the late Robert E. MacNeal.

She is survived by her nephews, Richard MacNeal Davis and Herbert L. Davis Jr; numerous great-nieces and nephews and several great-great-nieces and nephews.

Interment was held at Williamstown Methodist Cemetery.

Dean Freiday

Manasquan resident Dean Freiday died Tuesday, March 4 in Ocean Medical Center, Brick.

He was 92 years old.

Born in Irvington, he lived in Seattle, Rochester, N.Y. and Elberon, before moving to Manasquan 30 years ago.

Mr. Freiday was a veteran of the United States Navy. He owned a camera supply prior to his service during World War II. During the war he served at Dutch Harbor in Alaska as a chief photographer.

It was during some advanced study at the University of Washington he met Esther Selke and were later to marry.

Dean obtained a position as registrar of acquisitions at the Newark Museum in New Jersey. He then was offered a curatorship at George Eastman House, a museum in Rochester, N.Y. He later became an editor/author for the Journal of American Society of Mechanicals Engineers, in New York City.

He was a delegate three times to the World Council of Churches Assembly. Among other appointments were journalistic accreditation to Session Three of Vatican Council II and as an Observer-Consultant to the Third World Conference of the Lay Apostolate at the Vatican in 1967. In addition, he served on the board of directors for the annual U.S. Conferences of the WCC. In New Jersey he was president of the Red Bank Area Council of Churches, followed by service on the Manasquan Area Ministerium. Dean was co-chair of Catholic & Quaker Studies in which he helped publish numerous books. He has published more than seven books. His “Barclay’s Apology in Modern English,” first published in 1957, continues to be a standard work on Quaker Theology. He published more than a dozen articles in Quaker journals and served a term as editor of Quaker Religious Thought.

In recognition of Dean’s theological and ecumenical work, the Houston Graduate School of Theology [a Quaker institution] awarded him an L.H.D [doctor of humane letters. He was active in several leadership responsibilities at the Manasquan Friends Meeting House in Manasquan.

Dean was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.

Mr. Freiday is survived by his wife of 61 years, Esther “Sandy” [nee Selke]; and is also survived by his son, William, of Manasquan and his daughter, Gail, of Reston, Va.; two sisters, Joan Edwards and Ruth Freiday, both of Florida; and two grandchildren, Scott and Drew Crockett.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Manasquan Friends Meeting House.

Interment will be private at the Manasquan Friends Meeting Cemetery, in Wall.

James O’Connor

Livingston resident James O’Connor [nee Weiss] died peacefully on Jan. 26 at home. He leaves behind many loved ones, including family in Wall.

He was 84 years old.

He served the nation during the early stages of the World War II, doing surveillance in Alaska to prevent Japanese attack of our mainland.

He received numerous citations for performance beyond the call of duty during the Invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He also served a term of duty during the Korean War and volunteered for a second time only to be turned down due to a hip injury.

Upon his return, he met and married Adeline Tannenbaum, of Newark, who was an officer in the Marine Corps. Jim went on to serve as a purchasing agent in Orange Hospital, Irvington, and Adeline served as head of the Medical Transcription Department in Summit Hospital, Livingston.

He was predeceased by his loving wife of 40 years, Adeline.

He leaves behind three nieces and one nephew, including Joanne and her husband, Larry French, of Wall.

He was a true friend to everyone, a loving husband and uncle and he will greatly be missed.

George W. Conte

Point Pleasant resident George W. Conte died on March 6 in Ocean Medical Center, Brick. He leaves behind many loved ones, including family in Manasquan.

He was 78 years old.

Mr. Conte was born in Passaic. He lived in Clifton for 40 years, before moving to Point Pleasant in 1992, and happily spent the last three years of his life at Sunnyside Manor in Wall.

He was a certified public accountant for many years. He was in the Army and served in the Korean War. He was awarded a Bronze Star in the Korean war for valor.

Mr. Conte was a member of St. Martha’s Church, Point Pleasant.

He was predeceased by his wife, Marilyn, and sister, Mary DiSalvo, both in 2006.

He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, George Conte Jr., of Manasquan, and Richard Conte and his wife, Dinorah, of Robbinsville; daughter, Patricia Conte, of Greensboro, N.C.; brother, Charles Conte; and two grandchildren, Chelsea and Nicholas.

The family requests that anyone wishing to send flowers, that plants and vases be sent. Anyone wishing to make a donation in lieu of flowers may send donations to the Alzheimer’s Association or to Ocean Medical Center, Brick, in his name.

Andrew J. Gallagher

Belmar resident Andrew J. Gallagher died on Wednesday, March in at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 79 years old.

Born and raised in Bayonne, he was a graduate of Holy Family Academy in Bayonne and Seton Hall University. Mr. Gallagher served as a teacher with the Union City Board of Education for 38 years before retiring.

He and his family had spent their summers at the Jersey Shore before coming to Belmar permanently in 1968. He became very active in the Belmar community. He served on the Belmar Board of Education for 14 years during which he sat as chairman, and was elected councilman in 1995, an office that he held until retiring in 2004.

During his tenure he had also sat as council president. In 2005, he was appointed deputy mayor for senior affairs for his longtime commitment to improving recreational and other service programs for seniors not only in Belmar, but also the surrounding communities.

Mr. Gallagher was one of the original organizers of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, served as parade committee treasurer and had been named grand marshal. Other organizations that Mr. Gallagher devoted his time and energy to are the Belmar Elks Lodge No. 1997, the Knights of Columbus in Bayonne, the Jerry Lynch Social and Civic Club, where he sat as president for 20 years, and the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh Jersey Shore Chapter, where he was one of the earliest members.

He was a member of the Belmar Chamber of Commerce since its inception. He, along with his wife, have been the owners of Gallagher’s Guest House in Belmar for over 30 years.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Naval Hospital Corps.

Andrew was one of the finest gentleman from the “old school,” where a gentleman was a gentleman. His honesty and integrity have earned him the reputation of being a totally sincere man. His family is deeply devoted to him and have been proud to have him as their husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Lois T. Petronick Gallagher; his daughter, Natalie Mary Gallagher; and his loving grandchildren, Andrew Francis Hurley and Blake Kristen Hurley. He also leaves several nieces and a nephew and was predeceased by parents, Andrew and Mary Thompson Gallagher, and his brother, Jack C. Gallagher.

Entombment was held at St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Wall.

William Carlone Sr.

Wall resident William J. Carlone Sr. died on Monday, March 10 in Jersey Shore Center, Eatontown.

Mr. Carlone was born in Chatham on April 30, 1921. Bill graduated from Chatham High School in 1940 and attended Washington State College, in Pulman, Wash.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II where he served as a radio operator and gunner on the B24.

Bill was a salesman for 28 years with the Trenton Beverage and Premier Beer Company. He worked for his brother Al’s construction company as a superintendent of construction. Bill was a fireman in Red Bank in 1950 serving as a lieutenant, captain president and exempt life member.

He started his officiating career 1953 as a basketball official with Board 34 of Camden. He was secretary and cadet supervisor of the Shore Chapter 34 Board, secretary of the Treasure Board 34 Chapter from 1953 to 1961, and secretary of the Treasurer Board Chapter 194 from 1961 to 1983. He also was Cadet supervisor of Board 194 IAABO for 23 years, executive committee member of 194 for 26 years, IAABO Rules committee three times, examination committee three times, Board Policy committee once, constitution and by-laws two times, president of 194 IAABO in 1983, and Chairmen of NJ State Council of basketball boards from 1961 to 1962. He served for 17 years as chairman of the National Federation on Awards Committee.

He received the Achievement Award from the NJSIAA in 1984, Achievement Award from the IAABO headquarters and was an IAABO life member since 1992. He was a charter member of the National Federation Officials Association, and was observer in basketball for the NJSIAA for 13 years up until his passing.

Bill’s most proud moment was in 1959 he was the founder father of the Jersey Shore Charter in 1961 from IAABO and NJSIAA. Bill officiated 10 state basketball finals, 12 Shore Conference Championships, and officiated Junior College and Service Ball.

In football, he worked the first Pop Warner football game at the Jersey Shore, and worked 43 years of officiating football including nine state finals and was a member of the NJFOA.

In baseball, he founded the Shore Umpires Association in 1968 and previously was a member of the NJSUA Association. He was the first president of the Shore Umpires Association and served 30 years on the executive committee of the SUA, officiated 11 state finals and umpired the Jersey Shore League for 43 years. Bill worked in the American League in Professional Baseball as an umpire and also in the pro senior league in Florida from 1989 to 1990. He received the Jim Sullivan Award in Basketball, The Bill Kunkel Award in Baseball and in 2004 he won the Monmouth County Achievement Award in Monmouth Baseball and was inducted to the Jersey Shore Sports Hall of Fame.

He was predeceased by his parents, Anthony and Mary Louise Carlone; brothers, Joseph, Carl, Anthony and Albert; sisters, Mary, Laura and twin sister, Clara.

Surviving are his sons, Bill Jr., of Tinton Falls, Robert, of Canada; a daughter, Cindy, also of Tinton Falls; a sister, Eleanor, of Palmer, Pa.; a brother, Mario, of Deland, Fla.; and five grandsons, Matthew, David, Chris, Eli and David. He also leaves many nieces and nephews.

Visiting will be today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Highway 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall.

The service will be held at the conclusion of the evening visitation at 8:30 p.m.

Interment will be held privately at the New Jersey Veterans Cemetery, Wrightstown.

Agnes Keim

Neptune resident Agnes E. Murphy Keim died on Saturday, March 8 in the Tower Lodge Care Center of Wall Township. She leaves behind many loved ones, including family in Wall and Bradley Beach.

She was 83 years old.

Born in Keyport, Mrs. Keim remained a lifelong resident of the Shore area. She was employed with Bendix of Eatontown in the tube department from 1953 until 1963.

Mrs. Keim was predeceased by her parents, Frank Murphy and Elizabeth Ludvigsen Murphy.

Surviving is her beloved husband of 53 years, David H. Keim of Neptune; her loving children, Douglas David Keim, of Point Pleasant, Michael Murphy Keim and his wife, Ria, of Wall, and Patricia Elizabeth Montgomery, of the Wanamassa section of Ocean Township; a brother, Frank Murphy, of Bradley Beach; and her twin sister, Winifred Van Brunt, of Toms River. Also surviving are her three very special grandchildren Mike, Kelly and Shannon.

Entombment was held at Monmouth Memorial Park, Route 33, Tinton Falls.

Dorothy Blair

Manasquan resident Dorothy Stults Blair died peacefully on Friday, March 7, after a brief stay in Sunnyside Manor, Wall Township.

She was 101 years old.

Dorothy spent her summers in Manasquan from 1929, before moving permanently in 1952. Born to Albert H. and Eudora Mount Stults, Prospect Plains, she was the eldest of five children. Dorothy graduated from Jamesburg High School in 1925 and received her teaching degree from Millersville State University of Pennsylvania in 1927. Dorothy taught first grade at Millersville Elementary in the 1930s. It was during this time she met and later married Samuel Y. Blair in 1938.

Upon moving to Manasquan, Dorothy taught kindergarten at Manasquan Elementary from 1952 until her retirement in 1968. Dorothy was active in many local clubs and organizations including the Manasquan Woman’s Club, The Republican Club, The D.A.R., The Eastern Star, Manasquan Elks and the Manasquan River Yacht Club.

After retirement she spent many years volunteering at the Point Pleasant Hospital. Dorothy was a fixture on Pompano Beach, Manasquan, rarely missing a day. She also enjoyed dancing and bowling with her husband and together they loved to entertain their many friends.

Dorothy was predeceased by her beloved husband, Sam, in 1984. She had survived all her siblings, Marjorie Weisert, Manasquan, Wallace Stults, Trenton, John Stults, Hagerstown, Md. and Evelyn Stults, Jamesburg. She was also predeceased by her grandson, David Jenkins.

She is survived by her loving and caring daughter, Lois Jenkins, Manasquan; many nieces and nephews throughout the country; her grandson Sam and his wife, Kay, Manasquan; and her great-grandchildren Michael, Sara, Samantha and Brooke.

Interment will be held today in Brainerd Cemetery, Cranbury, at 11 a.m.

Concetta Labate

Spring Lake resident Concetta Labate passed away on Monday, March 10 in her home.

She was 85 years old.

Connie was born and raised in Philadelphia and lived in the area most of her life before moving to Spring Lake 15 years ago.

Mrs. Labate was a communicant of St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake, where she served as an offering counter.

She was a volunteer at the VNA Thrift Shop in Manasquan, a member of the Spring Lake Women’s Club and also a Platoon Leader of the Battle of the Bulge Veterans Group.

She was predeceased by her son, Peter J. Labate, in 1985; and her husband, Francis Labate, in 2001.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara E. Van Belle, Spring Lake Heights; her sister, Josephine Debenedetto, of Philadelphia; her daughter-in-law, Josephine Campo, of Nevada; her grandchildren, Lori Greenstein, Jacqueline Van Belle and Brian Van Belle; and great-grandson, Nicholas.

Friends may call on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South St., Manasquan.

A funeral Mass will be offered on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Catharine’s Catholic Church, Spring Lake.
